On Your Own

If you would rather book independently, aim for the Upper East Side below 72nd Street or Midtown East above 55th. Both put you within a ten-to-twenty minute walk of the Zoo, straight through the park or along Fifth Avenue.

Getting Here

By Air

JFK — 45–75 min by car; AirTrain to the subway is cheaper and often faster in traffic.

LaGuardia — 30–50 min by car. Closest to Manhattan.

Newark (EWR) — 45–75 min by car; NJ Transit to Penn Station is reliable.

By Train

Amtrak and NJ Transit arrive at Penn Station. Metro-North arrives at Grand Central. Both are a short cab ride from Midtown.

Getting Around

Do not rent a car. Yellow cabs, Uber, and the subway will get you everywhere, and parking in Manhattan is its own kind of punishment.

For the Zoo, the closest stops are Fifth Ave–59th St (N, R, W), Lexington Ave–63rd St (F), and 68th St–Hunter College (6).
